👩‍⚕️ Your Smile Is More Than Just Aesthetics

I’ve been helping patients care for their smiles in my Makati dental clinic for over two decades.

I can tell you with certainty that most people do not realize something critical – how our teeth and gums are connected not just to our confidence, but to our overall well being, including our heart and brain’s health.

The germs and bacteria formed by poor oral conditions can enter our bloodstream and cause infections and inflammation to many body parts, including the heart and the brain.

Several research suggest that gum diseases can be the gateway to heart disease, clogged arteries, stroke, and even dementia and Alzheimer’s*, among others.

Did you know that over 72% of Filipinos suffer from tooth decay, and 50% have gum disease?** That’s a staggering number, but the good news is that it’s preventable!

🦷 Part 1: Understanding Your Teeth and Gums

Your teeth are composed of enamel, the hardest substance in your body. Think of enamel as your tooth’s armor. Beneath it lies dentin, and at the center is the pulp, which contains nerves and blood vessels.

Your gums (or “gingiva”) are the soft tissues that hold your teeth in place for protection and support. Healthy gums are pink and firm. They act like a cushion and a seal, protecting the roots of your teeth.

Protective Barrier

The gingiva acts as a protective barrier, covering the tooth sockets and supporting structures like the alveolar bone and periodontal ligament.

Support

It helps to hold the teeth in place within the jawbone and provides stability for chewing and speaking.

🪥 Part 2: Mastering Effective Brushing Techniques

Proper brushing is crucial for maintaining oral health. Here’s how to do it effectively:

  • Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and toothpaste.
  • Hold your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to the gums. This angle helps remove plaque and debris from the gumline.
  • Gently move the brush back and forth in short (tooth-wide) strokes. Avoid pressing too hard, as this can damage your gums and enamel.
  • Brush all surfaces: the outer, inner, and chewing surfaces of the teeth.
  • For the inside surfaces of the front teeth, tilt the brush vertically and make several up-and-down strokes.
  • Don’t forget to brush your tongue to remove bacteria and freshen your breath. A tongue scraper can help even better with this.
  • Brush for at least two minutes, twice a day.

🧵 Part 3: Flossing – The Right Way

Flossing removes plaque and food particles between teeth and under the gumline. Here’s the proper technique:

  • Break off about 18 inches of floss and wind most of it around each middle finger, leaving about 1-2 inches to work with.
  • Hold the floss taut between your thumbs and index fingers.
  • Gently slide the floss between your teeth using a gentle sawing motion. Avoid snapping the floss into the gums.
  • Curve the floss into a “C” shape against the side of the tooth. Gently slide it beneath the gumline.
  • Move the floss up and down, cleaning the side of each tooth.
  • Use a clean section of floss as you move from tooth to tooth.

🍎 Part 4: Nutrition and Oral Health

What you eat affects your teeth and gums. Here are some tips:

  • Eat a balanced diet rich in whole foods like  fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
  • Crunchy fruits and vegetables, like apples and carrots, can help clean your teeth naturally and stimulate saliva production.
  • Limit sugary snacks and beverages, which can cause cavities.
  • Drink plenty of water to help wash away food particles and bacteria.

👩‍🦳 Part 5: Special Considerations for Women

Hormonal changes can affect your oral health. You may experience:

  • Dry mouth, which can increase the risk of cavities.
  • Gum sensitivity or bleeding.
  • Changes in taste.

To combat these issues:

  • Stay hydrated by drinking water throughout the day.
  • Use sugar-free gum with xylitol or lozenges to stimulate saliva production.
  • Visit your dentist regularly to monitor changes and get professional advice.

🧠 Part 6: The Mouth-Body Connection

Your oral health is linked to your overall health. Poor oral hygiene can lead to:

  • Heart disease: Bacteria from gum disease can enter the bloodstream and affect the heart.
  • Diabetes: Gum disease can make it harder to control blood sugar levels.
  • Respiratory infections: Inhaling bacteria from the mouth can lead to lung infections.

Taking care of your mouth is taking care of your body!

🦷 Part 7: Common Dental Problems in the Philippines

In the Philippines, the most common dental issues include:

  • Tooth decay: Affects about 72% of Filipinos.
  • Gum disease: Affects about 50% of Filipinos.
  • Tooth discoloration: Often caused by smoking, coffee, or tea.

Regular dental check-ups can help prevent and treat these problems early.

🏥 Part 8: When to See a Dentist

You should visit your dentist:

  • Every 4-6 months for a routine check-up and cleaning.
  • If you experience pain, bleeding gums, or loose teeth.
  • If you notice changes in your mouth, such as sores or lumps.

Early detection is key to preventing more serious issues.
